Spring Cleaning for your Face

Joseph Coupal - Monday, May 19, 2014

By: Mary Kelley

It’s finally starting to feel like spring! I’ve been putting off spring cleaning my house but I am making sure to “spring clean” my skin care routine. It is important to adjust your skin care routine at home and when you get treatments as the seasons change. Oily skin may protect skin from drying out in the winter but will get clogged in the warmer months; dry skin that needs extra hydration during the colder months may not need as much hydration as the humidity rises; and, all skin needs to be protected with SPF now that the days are longer.

Here’s what you can do to “spring clean” your routine:

  1. Start a new habit of washing your makeup sponges and brushes on a weekly basis. This should be a year-round habit but if you aren’t doing it, consider this a spring resolution. Keeping your brushes clean eliminates bacteria growth and reduces breakouts.
  2. Switch to lighter cleansers and moisturizers. Now that the cold temps and dry air have (hopefully!) ended, your skin may not need as much hydration.
  3. Schedule a skin analysis with your aesthetician. It’s important to make sure you are using the best products for your skin type and a skin analysis will help you understand what products to use and how to use them for the best results.
  4. Now is a great time to schedule a facial. You skin is the largest organ in your body and you need to take care of it. Your aesthetician can recommend the best facial for you. Typically, an appropriate facial for this season involves treatments that would exfoliate and hydrate dull skin or laser treatments to rejuvenate the skin and stimulate collagen. Dream Spa Medical also combines the best of both worlds with two hydrating laser therapy treatments: The DermaGlow and the HydraGlow.
  5. Find a sunscreen for your face and body that you absolutely love. As with keeping makeup brushes clean, protecting your skin from sun damage should be done year-round. If you don’t love your sunscreen, you won’t use it. Most moisturizers that have additional SPF added to their formulas do not provide enough sun protection. Now is the time to buy smaller sizes of different sunscreens that provide both UVA and UVB protection and find one that you will wear every day. Personally, I use SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense for my face and Image Skincare’s Prevention+ in SPF 50 for my body.

As always, make an appointment for a free consultation with Dream Spa Medical. Our skilled aestheticians can work with you to create a home routine that incorporates products that you are already using and we can suggest new products to give you the best skin you could possibly have for spring!

Cheap Tricks: 17 Ways to Look Beautiful for Less

Joseph Coupal - Friday, May 16, 2014
Cheap Beauty Tricks

Your beauty routine shouldn’t cost a queen’s ransom. Want to save cash and look gorgeous at the same time? I asked beauty experts for their best money-saving tips. Here are 17 brilliant ideas you can bank on:

  1. Exfoliate on the Fly “Add one teaspoon of baking powder to your favorite cleanser to turn it into an exfoliating cleanser.” -Debra Jaliman MD, dermatologist and author “Skin Rules“
  2. Raid your Refrigerator “Head to your kitchen instead of the spa for your next facial! Start with a base of full fat Greek yogurt (it has lactic acid to break down dead skin cells, probiotics to balance bacteria and fat to moisturize) and add some raw honey for dry skin, sweet potato purée for acne prone skin or red wine for aging skin. Let sit for 15 minutes for a brighter, healthier complexion, for less than $5!” – Alexis Wolfer, founder of The and author of “The Recipe for Radiance”
  3. Keep it Simple “Don’t buy 5 or 10 kinds of the same kind of product. I use just one small brown eye shadow kit and it looks good in all seasons and depending on how much I apply it works for both day or night. Sign up for the Sephora beauty insider club. You get a free gift on your birthday plus can earn free samples all year long with purchases.” -Melissa Buckles of
  4. Baby Your Brushes “Use baby shampoo – it’s a great substitute for expensive brush cleaners.” - Nicci Gilland, the founder of A Different Face
  5. Measure Up “Shop for skin care the way that you shop for food, by looking at the cost per ounce. When you see a product that is $20 for .2 of an ounce, multiply and see that it’s actually $100 for one ounce… not a great deal. Instead, visit spas and salons. What you’ll find is that spa- and salon-quality products are a bargain as they include complimentary consultations with licensed experts.” - Celeste Hilling, CEO of Skin Authority
  6. Think Double-Duty “I like to use mascara as my eyeliner. When applying eyeliner to bottom to the lashes don’t be afraid to smudge it a bit. Keep a light hand and sweep your finger underneath for an easy smokey look. Lightly brush the mascara wand over your eyebrow hairs to darken them and set them in place.” – Lindsey Lopez, Beauty Expert/Professional Makeup Artist
  7. Buy Blueberries “There are few things that everyone might have on hand that can help with redness, including cucumbers, chamomile, avocados, and blueberries. Yes, blueberries! Blueberries have various therapeutic effects, which can be divided into three categories: vaso-protective activity (or protection of capillaries), antioxidant activity, and iron-chelating activity. Flushing, rosacea, and facial redness are the result of dilatation of tiny capillaries located just beneath the epidermis. Blueberries are known to alleviate flushing symptoms. To make a mask, simply crush organic blueberries in a bowl, add 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt, and apply to the whole face. It will taste so delicious you’ll be tempted to eat it!” -Ludmila Milic, an aesthetician at Kimpton’s Lorien Spa
  8. Skip the Spa “No time to go to the spa for that much needed facial? No problem. Use an unscented shea butter body moisturizer as a deep moisturizing skin mask or over-night moisturizing treatment.” – Mary Winkenwerder of the Ultimate Skincare & Beaute Report WebTV and Blog.
  9. Be a Guinea Pig “From blowouts and haircuts to massages and facials, you can find a less expensive option by participating in demonstrations, workshops or classes at a beauty school. All sessions are supervised by a pro, so no need to worry that you’ll end up with a beauty disaster. A simple web search for the treatment along with your city and “beauty school” or “cheap” can help you find a low-cost option.” -Regina Novickis savings expert at
  10. Get Sweet on Honey: “Honey attracts and retains moisture to help keep skin hydrated and glowing, and may keep away early signs of aging, like wrinkles, by maintaining proper moisture. As an anti-irritant, honey is a preferred ingredient for those with sensitive skin and acne, and can be used to help manage breakouts while keeping your skin moisturized. Manufacturers have used honey in everything from hand lotions and moisturizers to bar soaps and bubble baths. Look for honey in store-bought beauty products or simply add a squeeze of honey to your moisturizer, shampoo or soap at home.” -Experts at
  11. Skip Foundation “Use a tinted broad spectrum sun screen instead. You get light coverage and necessary sun protection at the same time.” – Mary Kelley, a licensed medical aesthetician with Dream Spa Medical in Canton
  12. Loyalty Counts “Find a hair dresser and colorist that you love and stick with them. There are so many reasons it’s a good idea: Any time you’re working with chemicals, colors, and cuts, it’s always great for one person to know everything about your hair. You’ll get better advice. The person knows you better, knows your lifestyle, and can really assist you better. Salons do extra perks for loyal customers, like free treatments, free bang trims, and sometimes testing new products.” – Rebecca Spera, host of Mirror/Mirror and Deals on ABC’s Live Well Network
  13. Go Coconuts “My most favorite cheap beauty trick is coconut oil. It is inexpensive, natural, and can be used for makeup removal, as a moisturizer, a dab is a great hair serum, 20 minutes of swishing as a teeth whitener and it’s great to cook with too, adding good fats to your diet, which helps make your skin and hair glow.”- Roberta Perry, president of Scrubz Body Scrub, Inc.
  14. Multi-task Your Moisturizer “You do not need to waste money on different types of beauty products to hydrate different parts of your body. If a product is truly safe, effective, and does what it promises to do, which is moisturize, then it can be used all over. That said, it is always best to go organic, as in doing so, you almost never go wrong.” Stephanie Adams-Nicolai , Founder & CEO of GODDESSY Organics
  15. Make It Stick “A concealer stick which can be used in a vairety of ways, including: cover-up for under eye circles, acne spots, under the brow as a highlighter, and traced around the lips to prevent lipstick from bleeding.” – Jo Jo Harder, beauty writer & Stylist
  16. Create Your Own Travel Kit “When your cosmetics are running low, places them in a cute bag in your car console for on-the-go touch-ups. This saves you from purchasing travel size products and going through the hassle of squeezing out every last bit of larger items. “ August McLaughlin, former international model, Los Angeles-based health and sexuality writer
  17. Try a Lipstick Trick “Want to jump on the nude lip trend, without committing to buying a nude lipstick? Take your liquid foundation and using a sponge apply it to your lips. Let it dry, and then apply your clear lipstick over your lips to add shine.” Karuna Chani, international makeup artist and skin care consultant

Sun Damage While Driving

Joseph Coupal - Monday, April 28, 2014

By: Mary Kelley

I have a confession to make. I got a sunburn this week. I wasn’t outside…I driving 20 minutes to work and my left arm and hand were bright red at the end of the drive. During the winter, I wear long sleeves and gloves and normally, I wear sunscreen on my hands and arms when I’m driving. Just one day of forgetting was a reminder that even if you aren’t spending the day at the beach, you should always wear sunscreen on any exposed skin.

Many of my clients have told me that they only wear sunscreen if they are going to be outside for long periods of time. Doing that doesn’t protect you from sun damage when you are sitting in your car, by the office windows, or walking from your house to your garage. This is a picture of a man who was a delivery truck driver for 28 years.

The left side of his face shows significant signs of sun damage. This damage didn’t come from one bad burn but from constantly being in the sun at work. Now, think, how many of you put sunscreen on when you go for a short walk, drive to work, or sit by a window? The next time you do, please protect your skin with sunscreen.

April is National Rosacea Awareness Month

Joseph Coupal - Monday, April 14, 2014

By: Mary Kelley

Rosacea is a skin condition that affects approximately 14 million people in the US. More women than men have rosacea but men tend to experience more severe symptoms. Rosacea can affect the skin on the cheeks, the nose, the skin behind the ears, and even the eyes.

There are a number of suspected causes of rosacea including genetics, environment, bacteria, and common organisms but doctors have not yet isolated a single cause of the condition.

Only a doctor can diagnose rosacea, common symptoms include:

  • Facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels.
  • Acne-like breakouts.
  • Thickening skin.

If you notice any of these symptoms, especially when combined with very sensitive skin, raised or bumpy patches of skin, or enlarged pores, consider making an appointment with your dermatologist to see if you have rosacea. Treatment options are available to keep this condition under control.

Having rosacea does not mean that you have to hide or that you cannot have facial treatments. Dream Spa Medical offers many treatments suitable for rosacea patients. After you call your doctor, call us for an appointment!

My Friend Brittany: Before and After Acne Treatment

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 08, 2014

By: Mary Kelley

Meet my friend, Brittney. She and I met at aesthetics school. Brittney and I have many things in common, including struggling with acne.

While my acne has been under control for a few years now, Brittney has been looking for the right combination of home care products and treatments. Once I was hired at Dream Spa Medical, I knew that I had the right resources available to help Brittney. We offer chemical peels, facials, laser treatments, and excellent home care products.

Together, Brittney and I are working to clear up her acne. Brittney’s skin is clearing up but she is still developing new lesions and has post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from the lesions that are clearing up. PIH refers to the dark spots left behind after acne.

Once Dream Spa Medical started carrying the VI Peel, I knew I had found a solution that would combat my friend’s existing acne and address her PIH at the same time. The VI Peel is a next generation, medium depth peel. It delivers maximum results with very little discomfort due to an advanced blend of acids and a numbing agent.

I explained the aftercare process to Brittney and went over the homecare treatment plan that comes with each VI Peel. Due to the strength of the peel, Brittney would certainly experience a physical peel for 3-6 days and I wanted to make sure she knew what to do at home.

We checked in every day and after a week the results were nothing short of amazing.

Brittney’s active lesions have cleared up and her pigment has been drastically reduced. We are continuing to work on a treatment plan to make sure that her skin stays healthy and clear.

I am incorporating VI Peels into my clients’ acne treatment plans because of the amazing results that I have seen with Brittney’s skin.
