“Hey, PIZZA FACE!!!”

Joseph Coupal - Monday, October 07, 2013

“Hey, PIZZA FACE!!!”

It was the end of a long day in a temp job that I wasn’t thrilled with. I was just out of college and still struggling to find my perfect career. I was temping for a public school system in an administrative office and found myself back at the same school where I attended 7th grade. Oddly, I felt like I was back in the 7th grade all over again.

I’ve struggled with acne since I was in the 6th grade.  I was a shy kid and having a face full of oil and pimples didn’t help matters. After a mortifying conversation with my mother, I went to see a dermatologist who put me on an ever-changing rotation of antibiotics, topical medications, and recommended certain cleansers from the drug store. My skin improved ever so slightly but not enough to say that I saw enough improvement to feel better about my skin. I tried every anti-acne product I could find (and afford on my high school/college budget) and even tried products from infomercials that promised free 30 day trials. Some products worked a little bit and others just made my skin worse.

Nothing worked.

Then, the esthetician who I was seeing for brow waxing suggested that I try a facial. Over time, she and I worked on my skin. She told me that just like getting regular dental checkups, we need to have our skin treated by a professional-especially when someone has problem skin. Also, I had to change my skincare routine at home. My esthetician also told me that we tend to get what we pay for when it comes to products. We don’t have to buy the most expensive products on the market but most products from the drugstores don’t really treat and heal acne in the long term. Over time, we found the right products for my skin. It wasn’t easy, finding the right home routine for skin care is like finding the perfect pair of jeans—you have to try a number of options before finding the right pair.

It did take time but my skin cleared up and has stayed clear for years. Most people are surprised when I tell them that I suffered from serious acne. Not only is my skin clear now, the products that I use help reduce the appearance of previous scarring and hyperpigmentation left over from my battle with acne. I do try new products based on the advice of estheticians and my own knowledge of what works and what doesn’t work.

Now, the only time I have to talk about pizza is when I splurge on a Friday night!

Ultherapy: A Nonsurgical Way to Lift, Tone and Tighten your Skin

Joseph Coupal - Monday, September 23, 2013

Is your sagging skin dampening your spirits? Lift your spirits and your skin with Ultherapy. Ultherapy is the only non-invasive FDA-approved procedure that lifts the neck, chin and brow. What does that mean? Non-invasive procedures are not surgical procedures and there is no downtime.

Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology to stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin from the inside-out. The skin’s resiliency and contours are renewed by gradually lifting and tightening the skin. Clients do notice immediate results but the real “WOW” factor comes after a few months as new collagen is stimulated. Here are some results from real Ultherapy patients.

Ultherapy can be used to combat the signs of aging on your neck, chin, brow, or we can customize the treatment for an all-over lift.

The Dos and DON’Ts of Face Washing

Joseph Coupal - Monday, September 16, 2013

Washing your face…it sounds so simple but how many of us are doing this simple act properly? A Google search with the phrase “how to wash your face” returned over 83 million results. Imagine 83 million different directions on how to wash just one part of your body. You don’t have to go through those articles for the right answer. Just follow Dream Spa Medical’s Do’s and Don’ts for an easy and effective way to wash your face.

  • Do use makeup remover. Most cleansers do not cut through foundation, eye makeup, or mascara. To completely cleanse your skin, you need to remove your makeup first.
  • Do use a clean face cloth and towel to wash and dry your skin. Bacteria that builds up on used cloths and towels contribute to break outs.
  • Do use corrective serums and creams at night to give the products enough time to penetrate your skin.
  • Do work with an esthetician to find the right products for your skin type and specific concerns. A good product line can go a long way towards looking your best.

  • Don’t go to bed without washing your face. It is important to cleanse your skin of all the bacteria, dirt, and oil that has built up on your face all day.
  • Don’t use steaming hot water. Water that is too hot will damage the small capillaries in your skin and can cause dehydration. Use tepid or lukewarm water instead.
  • Don’t pick at your skin. Blackheads and blemishes should be dealt with only by professionals. You will risk further breakouts and even scarring if you try to pick or pop unwanted blemishes.
  • Don’t forget to wash along your jaw line, hairline, neck, and upper chest. These areas should all be cleansed.

  • Wear sunscreen every day. Even if the weather is cloudy or if you are only going to be outdoors for short periods of time, you are exposed to the damaging rays of the sun. Don’t forget to put sunscreen on your hands if you drive every day.

You eat right, you make the time to exercise, and you take care of your body. But, still, you see cellulite and small pockets of stubborn fat that just won’t go away. Surgical procedures aren’t for you but you do want to look your best. Let Dream Spa Medical introduce you to VelaShape™ , the only FDA cleared device that effectively and safely contours, shapes, and slims the body by reducing cellulite and firming problem areas in as little as 4 treatments.

VelaShape is a virtually painless way to reduce the appearance of cellulite and results in localized circumferential reduction (the treatment area gets smaller). The procedure is approved for all skin types and you can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. VelaShape uses 4 techniques to reduce cellulite and improve skin appearance: Radio Frequency, Infrared Light Energy, and Vacuum and Mechanical Massage. The Radio Frequency and Infrared Light heat the fat cells to shrink them while the two types of massage increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage to even out the surface of the skin.

While results can be seen in as little as four treatments, Dream Spa Medical’s skincare specialists recommend buying a series of 6 weekly treatments and then continuing maintenance every few months along with proper diet and exercise. Results are even more dramatic and long lasting when used in conjunction with our August 2013 Product of the Month: SkinCeuticals Body Tightening Concentrate.

We are currently offering two VelaShape treatments for $185 through Amazon Deals from Aug 28-Sept 3, 2013 for a savings of $315 (normally we charge $250 per session). Clients can purchase up to 3 deals which is the equivalent of buying an entire series for $555, saving $695 off of our normal series price of $1250. This deal will only last until Sept 3, so make sure to buy yours today!

Still not convinced? Check out these before and after photos for cellulite treatment and for circumferential reduction:

End-of-Summer Skin Care Regimen - Canton, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Ahhh…summer in New England! Fun in the sun, whether you are at the beach or in the mountains. But, summer is not so fun for your skin. Whether you spent your summer out in the elements or keeping cool in the air conditioning, your skin took a beating.  Humidity can make our skin oilier. Air conditioners and central air units can dry out our skin. And, don’t forget the sun! Chances are, even if you were vigilant with sunscreen and covering up between the hours of 10 and 2, you have some sun damage. Sun damage = early aging and no one wants that.

Now that the summer is wrapping up, it’s time to start ramping up your skin care regimen.  At home, look for products to correct damage…Vitamin C to correct sun damage, exfoliating products such as alpha hydroxyl acids to clean out clogged pores, extra hydration for skin that is dry. Also, with the upcoming change in seasons, most people may need to adjust the products they use. Consider switching to products that are more hydrating for the upcoming cold months.

Most importantly, call Dream Spa Medical to meet with one of our skin care specialists for a free consultation on what facial and new fall skin care routine would be best to refresh your skin after a long summer of fun. The O2 Lift and Hydrafacial are fan favorites for refreshing the skin. We even offer laser treatments to remove unwanted pigment. You don’t have to say goodbye to the summer memories, just goodbye to the damage!

Is Your Cellphone Contributing to Breakouts?

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Holding your phone against your cheek traps oil in the pores, which can lead to those deep-forming acne cysts, black heads and white heads.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Watch out for office phones - Wipe them down! Consider all the people who press their face against the phone… more people means more dirt and oil!
  2. Get your phone off your face - Use a headset that doesn’t touch your face, put someone on speakerphone, and text when possible. The less often a phone touches your face, the better!
  3. Wash your face - if its possible wash your face after a phonecall DO IT!
  4. Clean your phone - wipe your phone down, and frequently. Better safe than sorry!

Bad Habit: Skipping the Gym

Joseph Coupal - Monday, August 19, 2013

Go to the gym for your skin! Exercise increases blood flow to the skin, causing a healthy-looking flush. Both immediately and over time, it has been shown to decrease tension, which can result in healthier skin. Cortisol has many functions in the body. It helps the body use sugar (glucose) and fat for energy metabolism, and it helps the body manage stress. Cortisol levels can be affected by many conditions, such as physical and emotional stress. When you're stressed, cortisol levels rise, and that leads to acne and other skin aggravations.

What are Your Hands Exposing?

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 06, 2013

Your AGE

You make your skin look fabulous, with products, procedures and facials. Your youth and beauty is revealed through your healthy skin, making you look younger and healthier. One glance in the mirror tells you that 50 really is the new 35…but then you look down at your hands.

Lines, creases, dark spots, and bulging veins on the back of your hands are the sneaky giveaways of your age. The hands are one of the first places where aging affects are shown, also an area that most people neglect when it comes to skincare. Did you know that having your hands on the steering wheel, driving, exposes your hands to the sun more than any other part of your body? Your hands are constantly exposed to sunlight and all of its photoaging effects.

Laser Hair Removal

Joseph Coupal - Monday, July 29, 2013

The insecurities that lie behind body hair are struggles that males and females face all of the time, especially in the summer. It’s common for women to get their upper lip waxed or bleached. Waxing the bikini line is another common hair removal procedure. It’s becoming more and more common for men to shave their chest and back hair.

The average American male begins to shave between the ages of 14-16 years of age. It is also estimated that a man will shave at least 20,000 times in his lifetime. One razor pack costs an average of about 12 dollars, while the replacement blades often cost about 25 dollars. Putting that into perspective, the money spent on razor-blades yearly, add up to thousands of dollars.

There is a common stigma in society promoting the look of clean and shaven individuals. With hair growing at 0.35 millimeters a day or 1 centimeter per month, it’s hard to keep up with this clean-shaven look. This means: shaving, razor burn, ingrown hairs, money spent. These inconveniences are just a few reasons why people are turning to laser hair removal.

Benefits of laser hair removal:

  • A non-invasive, gentle technique that eliminates undesirable hair from all parts of the body.
  • Leaves skin looking smoother and silkier.
  • Treats larger areas effectively because it removes more than one hair at a time.
  • Minimal discomfort.
  • Replaces waxing and razors.
  • Immediate return to normal activities.
